Tongariro Crater

Crater Lake, Mount Ruapehu, Tongariro National Park, North Island, New Zealand
Known as Te Wai a-moe in Maori, Crater Lake is a deep and active crater between the peaks, filling with water between major eruptions. The name ‘Ruapehu’ means ‘pit of noise’ in Maori. The colour of the lake, photographed here in high summer, is spectacular.
